Do I need to register to participate in RE?
Yes. Online registration is available to all registered parishioners. If you missed the registration deadline, please contact Jeannie Moran at [email protected] for class availability, as classes become very full by early July.
Is there a registration fee?
The RE fee is $40 per child, with a maximum of $100 per family for children in Preschool-Grade 12. No family will be turned away due to an inability to pay.
When do RE classes begin?
Registration begins in early June through the end of July and classes begin in late September. We follow the Bettendorf Community School District's calendar and do not have classes during their breaks. Early registration is encouraged, as classes fill quickly and families may not always get their first choice of sessions.
When are RE classes held?
RE class for Preschool (age 3), Pre-K, and Kindergarten is offered on Sunday mornings during the 8:30 a.m. Mass. RE class for 1st-6th grade is offered on Wednesday evenings at your choice of two sessions: 4:15-5:30 p.m. or 6:15-7:30 p.m.
How old will my child be when he/she receives First Reconciliation and First Communion?
These sacraments are received in Second Grade. Preparation takes place in class and at family workshops. Older students who have not yet received these sacraments can prepare at home with their parent using a book provided by SJV. Contact Jeannie Moran for more information.
What other programs are available?
Sprouts Nursery is available during the 8:30 a.m. Mass on the same weekends as RE classes. No registration is required; it is open to the first 20 children to arrive each Sunday. The Nursery is located in the RE Center and open to children ages 0-3. A pager is provided for you when you drop your child off in the event you need to be contacted during Mass. Our Nursery is staffed by SJV parent volunteers who have been trained and background-checked. Teens preparing for Confirmation also serve in the Nursery on a rotating basis.
Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered to children in grades 1-3 during the 8:30 a.m. Mass every weekend except those following Christmas and Easter. No registration is required. Your child will sit in Mass with your family until after the opening prayer. At that time, the Children's Liturgy leader will lead the children out of Mass to the RE Center. Your child will hear that Sunday's readings and Gospel at a child's level of understanding. Your child will return to Mass during offertory.
