Children's Religions Education

Learn, pray, Be your best

“Teach a child how to pray and you will give them the greatest gift.”

St. John Vianney's Children's Religious Education aims to support parent's vocation to raise and teach their children the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Catholic faith. We seek to connect the head (intellect) with the heart (will). This is done primarily through learning and praying.

We can't wait to serve you and your family!

Children's Religious Ed

(PK - 6th)

  • Do I need to register to participate in RE?

Yes. Online registration is available to all registered parishioners. If you missed the registration deadline, please contact Jeannie Moran at re@sjvbett.org for class availability, as classes become very full by early July.

  • Is there a registration fee?

The RE fee is $50 for one child, $90 for two children, $125 for 3+ children for grades Preschool-Grade 12. No family will be turned away due to an inability to pay.

  • When do RE classes begin?

Registration begins in early June through the end of July and classes begin in late September. We follow the Bettendorf Community School District's calendar and do not have classes during their breaks. Early registration is encouraged, as classes fill quickly and families may not always get their first choice of sessions.

  • When are RE classes held?

Pre-K, and Kindergarten is offered on Sunday mornings during the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

RE class for 1st-6th grade is offered on Wednesday evenings at your choice of two sessions: 4:15-5:30 p.m. or 6:15-7:30 p.m.

  • How old will my child be when he/she receives First Reconciliation and First Communion?

These sacraments are received in Second Grade. Preparation takes place in class and at family workshops. Older students who have not yet received these sacraments can prepare at home with their parent using a book provided by SJV. Contact Jeannie Moran for more information.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is offered to children ages preschool through 3rd grade on the first Sunday of each month, from October to May, during the 8:30am Mass.

No registration is required. Your child(ren) will begin Mass seated with your family until the opening prayer is completed. Fr. Rich will call the children to the altar for a blessing and then send them forth to the McGrath Center, led by the CLOW catechists, where they will hear the readings and Gospel at their level of understanding. All will return to Mass during the offertory.

Parents are welcome to accompany their children for CLOW. If you would like to volunteer for this program, please email Jeannie Moran, Director of Religious Education: re@sjvbett.org

What is Sprouts Nursery?

The SPROUTS Nursery is for children aged infant - 3 and open many Sundays during the 8:30 Mass.  Registration is not required; it is open to the first 15 children to arrive each Sunday.  The children enjoy supervised playtime in a stimulating environment while parents are at Mass.

Adult leaders who have passed a background check and the diocesan required training in VIRTUS, and teens in the Confirmation program care for the children on a rotating basis.

*Pagers are available if you need to return to your child during Mass.*
