Baptism

Baptism

Congratulations as you prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism! We look forward to helping your family prepare for and celebrate this special Sacrament of Initiation into the life of the church and St. John Vianney Parish.

  • What are parents' requirements prior to their child's baptism?

Parents must be registered and actively participating members of St. John Vianney. If you are members of another parish, but have a previous affiliation to SJV, you must follow the requirements of your local parish for baptism and request a letter of permission from your pastor for the baptism to take place at Saint John Vianney.

  • Is there a baptism preparation class to attend?

Yes. First-time parents are required to attend this class prior to the baptism of their child. Many parents choose to attend even before their child is born. We also encourage your child’s godparents to attend if they are able. For baptisms of subsequent children, this class may be repeated depending on the length of time since the first class (three or more years) and/or additional factors (including, but not limited to, new members). Please contact the parish office to inquire and register.

The baptism class is led by our deacon, Daryl Fortin, on Saturdays, 9:00-11:00am, during the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November.

  • How are baptisms scheduled?

Baptisms may be scheduled on most weekends unless another parish event or ritual takes precedence. Baptisms may occur during any of our three Mass times or following 4:30pm Mass (Saturday) or 11:00am Mass (Sunday).

  • How is my child baptized?

Baptism is celebrated by the pouring of water over the forehead of your child.

  • How many families may present their child for baptism?

For baptisms celebrated during Mass, one family will be scheduled. Baptisms following 4:30pm or 11:00am Masses may have up to three families scheduled at one time.

  • Who baptizes children at St. John Vianney?

Fr. Rich or Fr. Tony baptize children during Mass. Deacon Daryl or Deacon Steve baptize children after 4:30pm Mass (Saturdays) or after 11:00am Mass (Sundays).

  • What should my child wear?

There is no dress code for baptism; however, as baptism celebrates rebirth, we encourage you to dress your child in white.

  • My older child has not been baptized. What should we do?

We can tailor a special preparation process for a child who has reached the age of reason. Please contact Fr. Rich to discuss options.

  • May we take pics or record the baptism?

    Absolutely!

  • Is there a fee for baptism?

No. St. John Vianney Church does not charge a fee for the Sacrament of Baptism.
